Abscess - Through The Cracks Of Death
(Peaceville)

While Abscess has been credited as forming after the demise of Autopsy in 1996, Abscess was actually formed in 1994. Both Chris Reifert (Drums and vocals) and Danny Coralles (Guitars) are the masterminds behind this monstrosity prior to the band going full time, with Clint Bower (Guitars and vocals) and Joe Allen (Bass) completing the group.

After some underground releases through the Relapse label, Abscess finally signed on the dotted line with Peaceville (Also the home of Autopsy) with Through The Cracks Of Death (Their fourth) being their first release on their new label.

While the reputation of both Chris and Danny is held in high regard with their contribution with Autopsy, the same cannot be said for Abscess. Their last album Tormented was a lacklustre affair, with both the song writing and the production to blame for the albums lacklustre reaction from both fans and press alike. While their new album is certainly a marked improvement on both counts, it still fails to generate much excitement with its ‘heard them all before’ riffs, cohesion and sub-standard vocal delivery. Quite simply, their particular brand of lyrical gore metal fails to break any new ground in the scene, and while the songs on the album stand out from past releases, the moments that do stand out are overweighed by moments that don’t.

To sum it up, this is strictly for the hardcore fans out there that enjoyed Autopsy, and simply want something new to buy, or are curious as to what the old members are up to now.
