Dillinger Escape Plan - "Calculating Infinity" (Relapse) |
Every genre has a band that was there at the beginning, a band that without them, the genre would have probably died. Stoner had Kyuss in the early nineties, thrash had Metallica and Slayer in the early eighties, and noisecore has Coalesce and the crazy blokes in Dillinger Escape Plan.
Don't be mistaken, DEP are the heaviest band alive right now. They own the rawest vocals, the most insane guitarists, and a drummer that could play Meshu-ggah songs with his eyes closed. Calculating Infinity is an album of violent proportions. "43% Burnt", opens with a thumping riff travels an insane course and ends with that same fading out. Noisecore masterpiece "The Running Board"
contains one of the few soft passages (I can't remember any other) in Dillinger's repertoire (with the exception of the very well done segues). "Clip the Apex" and "Variations on a Cocktail Dress" are also extremely heavy and well written (listen to the dueling guitar riffs that are almost a minute into "Clip the Apex" and try to follow both). All the tracks scream genius (in the insane sort of way). For the drummers out there, you should check out the "Weekend Sex Change" segue for some truly incredible drumming.
Calculating Infinity is a strong disc and should not be over looked by any fan of heavy music. If noisecore is going to evolve into an important of music in general, these guys will definitely be part of the equation.
