Incubus

Blistering.com: What is it that scares you about Bush anyway?
Umm… Just go watch Fahrenheit 9/11 [laughs]. Moore explains it very well. I don’t really feel like I’m in a position with enough knowledge to really make a public comment about the state of the world, but I don’t think it’s any coincidence that the most powerful people in the country that are running the government are also in business with the people that profit from war. So, take that as you will.

Blistering.com: What would be the perfect world?
To have everyone be nice to each other [laughs]. But, that’ll happen, you know. I don’t know. Maybe I’m not as much as an optimist as I thought. Humans naturally reject the idea of a utopian society, so I don’t know what the answer is.

Blistering.com: If we did have a perfect world then what would artists do? Doesn’t art stem from things being imperfect?
Yeah, in a lot of respects, you’re right. I’m not happy that there’s a lot of pain and suffering in the world, but I guess it does provide some sort of a backbone for creativity. All of the most important creative movements have come from the face of adversity.

Blistering.com: You guys tour all over the world. Do you ever worry about the threat of terrorism?
No, I don’t really worry about those things so much, but it does give you an interesting perspective on the perception of Americans to the rest of the world. The rest of the world, kind of in a general way, sees America as a big bully and Americans as being arrogant and impatient people who expect everyone to wait on hand and foot, which is kind of true in certain respects. American people are not used to going to somebody elses country and speak a different language and use different money. We’re a society based on convenience - not that other society’s aren’t as well - but it’s just different. America is very big and its no wonder why we’re perceived the way we are. I mean, we went against the will of the rest of the world to go to war and most people seem to think it was unnecessary.

Blistering.com: You think we should have waited longer and see how it unfolded with the UN?
Well, I don’t think that anything would have been different. I think that the people in charge of this country made up their mind before and were just trying to rally support from the world before they did what they were going to do anyway - that’s what I think anyway.

Blistering.com: When you’re overseas in these other countries, and you’re not on stage and you’re just another American tourist, how are you treated?
Most of the time really well. Everywhere people are really nice, it’s just when you get into conversations and start discussing things is when you start to see their perceptions of us. It’s not like people would come up to me and criticize me for being an American or anything [but] there’s definitely a vibe. [Laughs]

Blistering.com: At this level of your career, what are the goals for you now?
We just want to keep doing what we’re doing. We started our own charity organization (The Make Yourself Foundation) that we’re really proud of and it’s made a lot of progress. It generates money for causes that we think are important. We’ve done a lot of things to raise money this year and so far we raised a good amount of money. We’re just gonna keep going until the end of the year and then we’re gonna give the money to these various charity organizations. We’re having a blast and it’s pretty cool because it’s for a good cause. [END]
