Blistering Song of the Day: Pungent Stench's "Daddy Cruel"

By: Mike Sloan

Pungent Stench – “Daddy Cruel”
From 1991’s Death Is Just the Beginning…Vol II (Nuclear Blast)

When it comes to the late, great Pungent Stench, their music was always hit or miss. They’ve had terrific albums like Been Caught Buttering and For God Your Soul… For Me Your Flesh; they’ve had lousy stinkers like Club Mondo Bizarre – For Members Only. However, when it comes to a singular moment of sheer brilliance, almost no song ever written before or since is as twisted, brutal, pulverizing or unfathomably catchy as “Daddy Cruel.”

To this day, the song stands the test of time and remains one of my all-time favorite jams. The rolls and blast beats that kick start the song are barbaric, but it’s not until the thrashing guitar riffs and ultra pummeling double bass break the song open when all hell breaks loose. It’s one of only a handful of metal moments, like at the 33-second mark of “Daddy Cruel” I’m referring to, that stack up to the unbelievable strength of when Slayer’s “Raining Blood” properly kicks in. If that’s not enough, the Austrian sickos switch gears 56 seconds in and deliver one of the nastiest, most groove-laden riffs in music history.

At just about three-and-a-half minutes in length it’s that rare song that is too short, but the end actually comes at the perfect moment because you desperately want more. Pungent Stench is nowhere near my favorite band in the world (they’re somewhere in the bottom portion of my top 50), but “Daddy Cruel” is easily on my top ten list of all-time favorite songs. I’ve listened to it a thousand times and it never gets old.
