Blistering Song of the Day: Blind Guardian's "Welcome to Dying"

By: David E. Gehlke

Blind Guardian - "Welcome to Dying"
From 1990's Tales From the Twilight World

The Guardians of the Blind circa 1990 were about to enter into what is perhaps the most illustrious run of albums in power metal history, starting with Tales From the Twilight World. The Germans had barely tapped into their capabilities with its Follow the Blind predecessor, producing live staple "Valhalla," but it was on Tales... where BG really hit their stride. "Welcome to Dying" is the album's linchpin, a razed combination of proto speed metal and power metal sensibilities, a direct result of Kai Hansen’s (Gamma Ray, ex-Helloween) tutelage, who took the band under his wing upon his departure from the ‘Weenies in 1988. In fact, you can hear Hansen's influence smack-dab in the chorus, where it reaches for the sky ala Keeper-era Helloween, only with more brashness and onus on tremendous storytelling. Nobody has quite perfected the speedy power metal template like the Guardians, and "Welcome to Dying" was a harbinger of even greater things to come...
