The last time Trent Reznor graced us with his presence was with 1999’s colossal double album effort The Fragile, and with its release, two indisputable facts became evidently clear. The first was that Reznor was very much an artist that wasn’t interested in rehashing old ideas (As the follow up to 1994’s The Downward Spiral, The Fragile was not only a self indulgent epic that was praised as much as condemned, but a complete departure from Nine Inch Nails’ metallic sound). The other was that regardless of Reznor’s immense status as a recording artist, he was still human (Basically, The Fragile may have attained critical acclaim, but fans were skeptical).
Perhaps because of reactions towards The Fragile (Or more likely because the album was a cathartic experience), Reznor decided to take a step back with the promise of more song orientated material for the long awaited follow up With Teeth (Originally titled as Bleedthrough), and it’s a promise that Reznor has delivered, along with yet another progression in sound from his distinguished past.
