If the prototypical metal band were to be made, all bets would be that band would be strikingly similar to Denmark’s Mercenary. Finally, finally, we have a band that is capable of taking metal to the next level, able to reach those outside of the fold while blowing minds within it. Mercenary is an intoxicating mix of melodic death metal, the swirling haze of Ocean Machine-era Devin Townsend, combined with the daring nature of prog and power metal. Each song has an identify of its own; each vocal idea, guitar riff, or harmony is carefully thought out and perfected. 11 Dreams is a flawless listen, with the uncanny ability to alter lives and inspire all in one sitting.

Mercenary’s versatility is by far their strongest suit, even though many of their songwriting choices are smart and swift. The two-pronged vocal attack of Mikkel Sandager and Kral allow for some stunning moments of discernable growling, crystal-clear clean vocal histrionics, and some hefty mid-range vocals as well. Lead guitarist Martin Buus illuminates via some memorable solos that hit the spot in terms of melodic grace, while keyboardist Morten Sandager adds a haunting, melancholy texture that shimmers throughout the entire album.

‘reDestructedDead’ is an instant classic, becoming immaculate thanks to a glorious, immediate chorus and an outstanding, graceful solo from Buus. ‘Falling’ benefits from a catchy chorus that offsets some of Mercenary’s more menacing moments, while ‘Firesoul’ reeks of old-school glory thanks to a heart-riveting performance from Kral. We are even graced with a thoughtful ballad called ‘Times Without Changes’ that doesn’t come across contrived or forced in the slightest bit. In fact, its one of the many album highlights.

Let’s not beat around the bush here: 11 Dreams will probably outlast and outshine anything else that comes out in ’05. This may be the finest display of melodic metal since In Flames burst onto the scene with The Jester Race. However, comparing Mercenary to the likes of even In Flames will not do the band justice. 11 Dreams is an instant classic, one that will be looked upon in the same manner as Slaughter Of the Soul, Storm Of the Lights Bane, and Heartwork. Satan dropped by my house with 11 Dreams and proclaimed it will steal my soul for the betterment of my life. Boy was he right.
