O.h.m. - Open Wide Sky (Independent)

By: David E. Gehlke

[8/10] This band had better be careful, or else they will be sued by former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland for using the same name as Poland's jazz-fusion trio OHM. This O.h.m. is a more organic, tribal rock outfit that is releasing its 5 song EP, Open Wide Sky. Five songs which are actually solid for such a mish-mash of styles, offering up very little for the diehard metal fan, but plenty for those who are keen on adventurous rock. Maybe if Chris Poland was in this band they'd receive more attention, but it's very possible O.h.m. will garner recognition on their own.

Proper reference points for O.h.m. would be the spacey vibe of Jane's Addiction matched with the free-flowing aura of jam bands like Phish and the Dave Matthews Band. Open Wide Sky won't come close to passing as a metal cd; in fact it defies even the most typical of mainstream rock categorizations. The guitar work is melodic, yet restrained allowing the songs to breathe. Tribal elements are scattered throughout the five songs, ranging from chants to the use of various percussion instruments. The dual vocal attack of Chris-Paul Basso and Mahina Yuki Terauch intertwine effortlessly with each other, making Open Wide Sky a pleasing listen throughout.

Beware folks, you aren't getting a CD from the man who shredded on such Megadeth classics as ‘My Last Words’ or ‘Wake Up Dead’. Instead this O.h.m. offers very little in the metal department, but will partially please those who are willing to step outside the box and venture into some unique territory. Who said all metalheads were one-dimensional anyways?
