[7/10] The word “Grave” is in My Own Grave’s name (real astute, I know), which gives proper headway as to how Necrology will sound. It…sounds…like…Grave. Modern Grave, which is not the good Grave ala You’ll Never See…. Bummer. Whether this is a tribute or not remains to be seen. Maybe we’ll never see.
The above is not say Necrology is a dud. In fact, it has some major steamroller action goin’ on during on “None Shall See,” (really?) which parlays crazed blast beats (on the black metal side) into the standard Swedish death metal template, while “Disciples of War” opens with guitar crunch that is simply overpowering.
Beyond that, Necrology proves to be rather rudimentary Swedish death metal. Devoid of melody, songs like opener “Awaiting Death” and “Bloodline Broken” have to rely on bouts of speed that do little to create any sort of distinction. A masterful production job by Dan Swano (Edge of Sanity, Bloodbath, etc.) does open things up a bit, but the songs aren’t anything to go nuts about, so it’s a moot point in the end.
Grave always played a distant fourth fiddle in the classic Swedish death metal scene behind Entombed, Dismember, and Unleashed. Where that ranks My Own Grave is anyone’s guess, which makes their sterile, unimaginative brand of Swedish DM all the less appealing.
