The Devin Townsend Project - Addicted (Inside Out/HevyDevy Music)

By: Tom Findlay

[8.5/10] On Addicted, the Devy charm has wormed its way in again, and might even have a bit more staying power than the sombre and strange predecessor Ki, the first chapter in this exciting new musical endeavour entitled the Devin Townsend Project.

The major role of Anneke van Giersbergen [ex The Gathering], a Dutch siren and trained from a young age in operatic singing, brings a haunting and beautiful aura to the slightly more serious tracks like “Numbered!” and “Ih-Ah!” She adds a new dynamic to Devin's ideas and another bow to the well-stocked quiver of the crazy Canadian.

The pummelling efforts of Ryan Van Poederooyen, the drummer from The Devin Townsend Band are back and are most welcome, and another fact that is sure to delight those who have followed Devin's work is that the reflective genius of “Hyperdrive” from Ziltoid the Omniscient (2007) has been given a playful reworking.

Fans of the more metallic and chaotic Hevy Devy output such as Ziltoid and SYL might want to steer clear of the poppier and more sprightly moments on the record. “Bend it Like Bender!” is the prime suspect, another “Bad Devil” or “Vampira,” and again somehow Devy gets away with it scott-free. Comically, the man himself stated: “You...in the Nausm shirt! ...look away!” in a blog about the song.

The tongue in cheek ethic of the final SYL album – The New Black (2006) (which was hardly typical of an SYL release) is very present on Addicted. It is fun and bouncy, yet the high standard of the songwriting will surely prevail and brush away any initial disagreement with the general sound of the album.
