Final Gravity - Final Gravity (Independent Release)

By: David E. Gehlke

[7.5/10] Credit Final Gravity for this: they managed to keep hook-based, conventionally-formatted numbers interesting for the course of 14 songs. It’s no small feat, which is probably why most bands wise-up and trim things to 11 jams or less, but we digress – this self-released effort has some charming moments.

A glance at the band’s bio and Myspace reveals an affinity for beer, which is fine although you’d hardly know it by listening to this LA-based quartet. Rather, the bulk of this album runs the gamut late-era Rush (start with Roll the Bones and go forward) and alternative rock. Some metal pops up, as on “Parallel Lives,” and “The Darkness,” but for the most part, its AOR, four-minutes and less numbers that highlight Bill Moore’s prog-ish vocals.

So again, this brand of song-oriented, simple, and radio-driven rock is hard to keep in line, so perhaps the band wasn’t all hopped up on beer during the album’s recording sessions. If they were, kudos – playing wrecked and playing well are oftentimes two diametrically opposed entities.
