Derek Sherinian - Molecular Heinosity (Inside Out Music)

[6.5/10] Unfairly accused of being the fall guy for Dream Theater’s subpar Falling Into Infinity album, keyboardist Derek Sherinian has made the most out of his post-DT time. With six solo albums (including Molecular Heinosity), a slew of projects including Platypus and Planet X, as well as long-running stints as touring keyboardist for Billy Idol and Yngwie Malmsteen, the man has been able to parlay his technical pedigree into a never-ending gig. Good for him, but his solo output has never quite risen above standard instrumental prog metal levels and Molecular Heinosity isn’t about to change that.
The bulk of Molecular Heinosity is showy, sorta aggro prog metal, with Sherinian’s keys being thrust to the forefront. Some spacey, DT-esque moments emerge during “Primal Eleven” and “Wings of Insanity,” seeing Sherinian and company (including guitarist/drummer Brian Tichy) take on a much more metal front than before.
The dazzling “Frozen By Fire” is far and away the best number on the album and is territory that suits Sherinian best, while there is a noticeable drop-off come “Molecular Intro” and the title track. “So Far Gone” (featuring Zakk Wylde on vocals) is hackneyed and safe, and Wylde’s nasal, annoying vocals don’t help the cause.
For music that is so insular as this, Sherinian is probably one of the better dudes to champion this style. Prog had its short boom at the onset of the decade and has since leveled off, leaving guys like Sherinian (and the small, secluded prog scene) to fight for every scrap, but when there is a chance to crossover – like there is here – looking a little more outward couldn’t hurt.
