[7.5/10]On this sophomore effort from Helsinki rockers April, we find a vastly accessible, radio-friendly appeal that resonates with a determined aura of self-confidence. Anthems For The Rejected is appropriately studious and sturdy, with April showing an potent affinity for constructing songs that not only rock in a duly hard fashion, but also resonate as being exceedingly memorable.
While the level of songwriting on this record is striking, it's the delivery that really drives home the point that April can hold its own in a metal landscape littered with kings, contenders and pretenders. Beneath the edgy axework of Mikko Merilinnaaka Machinegun and Janne Aulavuori lies an affinity for more traditional rock music exuded on cuts such as the sprawling, percussive "The Skies Come Alive" and the hopeful, tuneful "Homecoming." Aulavuori and Machinegun are a concrete guitar tandem, their tonal interplay and sense of dynamics giving the record a multiplicity that's the hallmark of every good rock album.
There's still enough angst herein to satisfy those who prefer harder-edged sounds, but in dissecting tracks like "Scream," you'll discover that melody is truthfully this outfit's forte. A radio-ready tune highlighting the robust vocal prowess of frontman Hakim Hietikko, this well-balanced cut is a standout pick. The album's razor-teethed, kickoff anthem, "The War" is an aptitude for crafting music that draws the listener into a compellingly intriguing sonic vision. There's no doubt this track brings comparisons to Finnish scene forerunners such as Children Of Bodom, and more appropriately, Norther, but in the end stands alone with a unique sonic identity in its own right.
On balance, this record is well-built, thoughtful and a good candidate for repeat spins that should duly appeal to fans of everything from the aforementioned Norther to Faith No More. If April has the goods to back up an impressive effort such as this in the live arena, Anthems For The Rejected could be one of the more successful records issued by Spinefarm to date.
