[6/10] Sweden’s Machinery have chosen a path well trodden by US veterans Nevermore but with a bit more emphasis on growled vocals. A slightly confused album is the result, but one that doesn’t hide the many possibilities for the future.

A varied attack, vibes of contemporary Swedes In Flames and Arch Enemy in more aggressive songs and Katatonia in softer territory. In fact if these bands don’t hit home, then Machinery may be a refreshing alternative. The heavier songs “Reason Is The Rush” and “Delirium In Vengeance” on the record are both kick ass melodic death metal numbers similar (but inferior) to Into Eternity and Insomnium.

The Passing suffers from good verse/poor chorus and poor verse/good chorus numerous times, and certain songs like frustrating “I Divine” never really reach a peak like they should.

The hooks in The Passing are both subtle in guitar work and grand in the shape of large choruses. Michel Isberg’s wail is slightly reminiscent of the grandiose Communion by Septic Flesh, although I doubt The Passing will rate as highly in the end of year polls for 2008.

A fine and catchy album with great ideas, Machinery have the talent and vision to procure a solid future, but The Passing will no doubt always be one of their stepping stones to greatness.
