Scars on Broadway’s first release is out and anyone who’s followed System of a Down’s material over the years is sure to enjoy it. Much like Serj Tankian’s solo release, Scars on Broadway (formed by SOAD’s guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan) has a familiar sound to the mother band it spawned from. The two founding members refuse to acknowledge Scars as simply a side project but as a full band that takes 100% of their current dedication and focus where they both now stand as musicians (cue statements from Stone Sour, The Raconteurs, Team Sleep, Emigrate, etc.)

Daron’s signature sweeps of the guitar with his erratic yet passionate vocals make the music even more convincing. Many can say this album is even easier to digest after SOAD’s Hypnotize and Mesmerize albums that highlighted a lot more on Daron’s vocal contributions than earlier material.

There are both lyrics and melodies on here that will stick with the listeners making this music all the more infectious and addictive. The guitar solo on “Insane” draws emotional just by its simplistic design. Let it be known none of these songs are lengthy, but that is a good thing. They’re all short and to the point (the longest being “Universe” at 4:15). The 15 track-long outing doesn’t jip the listener for quantity over quality. The weakest track is “Enemy” because the random jokey chorus of “We’re on drugs” in the middle of the song truly kills the flow. Unnecessary repetition of choruses will be a bit jarring for some people.

All in all, the slower songs shine the most. Tracks like “3005” and “Whoring Streets” are the cream of the crop, while other faster numbers like “Universe," “Chemicals," and “Serious” carry a very honorable mention.

Buying this album is a no-brainer for anyone who have enjoyed System of a Down’s evolution over the years and just may bring in some new fans as well. Easily one of the best albums this summer with all its memorable aspects.
