The answers below, accentuated with an exclamation point at the end of each answer might only fuel the debate on just how absurd black metal is. This age-old, tired, and pointless discourse on the validity of black metal has yet to run out of steam, so when someone like Dodsferd’s Wrath gives brief, succinct answers like this, the message board vultures will be swirling, ready to drop in with their two cents. Well, buzz off…
Cursing Your Will To Live prompted this interview – a decidedly necro, but deranged offering of Greek black metal, spiced up nicely by some blistering melodic segments that come out of nowhere. Mainman Wrath has crafted some memorable, attacking black metal anthems to refuse to tire, even when things get bogged down at the halfway point. As un-listenable as black metal can be at times, there are moments like Cursing Your Will To Live that prove black metal has the depth and brass balls to remain a viable musical entity.
So here’s Wrath – hardly verbose, but very forthright and focused with his answers. Black metal is his life and to step into his world would not be a wise move, so he keeps both Blistering and you, the reader at a distance, with Cursing Your Will To Live being his intended voice, not a spate of endless pontifications.
Blistering.com: Not a great deal of time has passed since Fucking Your Creation. Why such the quick turnaround in material?
Wrath : My art, my music and my bands, gives me life and strength to continue wandering through this shitty world! Isolated in my own haven I create my music, in certain atmosphere, in order to avoid damaging my psychological stability! That’s why you are observing such quick turnaround in material! Now I am working on new songs for the demands of a Dodsferd split cd and a Dodsferd 7”EP.
Blistering.com: Do you usually have a good backlog of material or do you work in increments?
Wrath: It is something that I cannot arrange! There are always new songs that I use for certain releases, either for Dodsferd, or either for my other bands! But generally, there is a more than good backlog of material, be sure of that!
Blistering.com: In my opinion, Cursing Your Will To Live is more sinister and slightly more melodic than its predecessor. Do you agree or disagree?
Wrath: That’s right! That was how I wanted to be the second part of my trilogy! The third part will be different!
Blistering.com: What was your state of mind going into the new album: More perversion or more hatred?
Wrath: Perversion, hatred, pain, disgust, frustration, sickness…everything that this world and its’ worthless living kind represent!
Blistering.com: Aside from a session drummer, you do everything in Dodsferd. Do you find this freedom to be a burden sometimes?
Wrath: No burden at all! My ideal will never be poisoned by anyone else’s ideas! No one has the ability to understand my way of thinking! No line up anymore, only session members!
Blistering.com: The songtitles this time out are more vitriolic than ever – why such the long, verbose titles?
Wrath: As you will have probably observed, I never include the lyrics of my songs in all of my releases with Dodsferd and with my other bands, Nadiwrath, Grab, Kampf! These long, verbose titles represent a small part of the message I want to spread in each of my songs! It’s the only thing you can read from my lyrics! Only a small part of it!
Blistering.com: How much does Christianity infringe upon your daily life?
Wrath: Total nothingness, failure and vanity! A bunch of slimy theories for the fat sheep that desperately need something to follow!
Blistering.com: Some portions of “Failure Was Describe…” and “Hypnotic Shitfuckers…” contain some of your most melodious and memorable riffs to date. Are you at all opposed to incorporating melody into your sound?
Wrath: My daily life has to do only with my world that is Dodsferd and my music!
Blistering.com: With that being said, can Dodsferd be necro and dirty with all of this melody?
Wrath: As far as it concerns my music, I can do whatever I want, I can do whatever pleases the demons in my head!
Blistering.com: Since Cursing… is the second part of your trilogy, what can we expect with the third part? Are you already working on it?
Wrath: The songs for the third part of my trilogy are almost ready! Expect something different!
Blistering.com: Cursing… is less black ‘n’ roll than Fucking…, so where can you go from here?
Wrath: When time is right you will see how it is going to be!
Blistering.com: You’ve been doing Dodsferd since ’01 – how do you feel you’ve developed since your inception?
Wrath: Everything is completely different since the birth of my band! I have been isolated in a big degree from everyone and everything!
Blistering.com: Greece has a spotty black metal history – what are your thoughts on the country’s BM output?
Wrath: I have no thoughts on the country’s black metal output!
Blistering.com: You’ve created a vastly superior BM album with Cursing…Do you ever sit back and reflect upon what you’ve done?
Wrath: Never! No rest at all!
Blistering.com: This probably isn’t much of a concern to you, but are there are any bands, black metal or not that you find to be interesting?
Wrath: There are a lot of bands black metal, death metal, grindcore, sludge, rock’n’roll that I find to be very interesting!
Blistering.com: Finally, what’s on the horizon for 2008?
Wrath: The new Dodsferd split cd and 7”EP, the debut album of Grab, the debut album of Nadiwrath, maybe a live show of Dodsferd with session musicians and many others!
