The miracles of technology made this record possible, but the ever-clandestine genius of Piggy, Snake, Away, and Jasonic make this perhaps the most digestible and fun Voivod record since Nothingface.
Driven by Piggy’s alien, minor-chord work, Katorz takes the aforementioned Nothingface reference and runs with it. Check out the bouncy ‘Dognation’, which would fit smack dab in between ‘Missing Sequences’ and ‘X-Ray’ on their 1989 opus or the insanely catchy ‘Mr. Clean’ which is perhaps the most accessible track Voivod has done since ‘Astronomy Divine’.
Piggy’s posthumous guitars sound great, but Snake sounds even better, as it was widely circulated he took the guitarist’s passing the hardest. For anyone who’s a fan of lyrics with wit, intro and extro-version, look no further than Snake, for he wrote the book on being irreverent and reverent.
Sad how people are finally ‘getting’ Voivod nearly two decades after they started to ravage the underground. As sad as Piggy’s death was and still is, it brought some much-needed attention to a band who’s been outsmarting the competition for years. The fact of the matter is that Voivod has always been the thinking man’s metal band, and you guessed it – that consists of yours truly and the thousands of other Voivod-minions dreaming of outer space and beyond. » theendrecords.com
