Sinamore - A New Day (Napalm Records)

By: Ken McGrath

Sounding like what Ville Valo thinks HIM sound like Finland’s hottest new export Sinamore already look like they’ve got a bright future in front of them. That the future’s bright probably helps because musically they’re shrouded in darkness. Fitting in perfectly between the Gothic rock with sweet hooks of HIM, the One Second-era doom of Paradise Lost and the stark melancholy of latter day Anathema the time is just right for a band like this. It’s just no-one really seems to know as of yet. If you’re a fan of bittersweet rock, with great melodies and a superb sense of song writing then you’re going to want to look into Sinamore. Vocalist / guitarist Mikko Heikkila, who also handled all the song-writing duties on A New Day, is blessed with a voice that floats like fog between Ville Valo (HIM), Pete Steele (Type O Negative) and ever so occasionally Jonas Renkse (Katatonia). You can even hear on some of the more concentrated parts the essence of Fear Factory’s Burton C. Bell. The immaculate, gleaming production is perfect, accentuating what a great collection of mid-paced modern doom-tinged rock this is and that song writing, that’s the core around which everything else spins. Sinamore have got ten powerful tracks at their fingertips here. From the opening seconds of ‘Follow Into The Cry’ you’re hooked and it’s obvious that these boys are veterans; despite forming in 1998 this is their first full-length debut, but it’s been worth waiting for. It’s dark and melancholic, yet poetic, soaring and bristling with subtle hooks that make you nod your head and wish they played this sort of stuff on the radio. There’s also something of a 1980s sound in their too, especially on ‘My Rain’ with the sparse verses, where half-spoken, gently sung vocals take precedence. ‘Misery Carnival’ and ‘Follow Into The Cry’ are both awash with the wide-eyed, beauty that makes a band like HIM so appealing and you have to wonder, with the right sort of push and maybe a good video to back up one of these tracks, could Sinamore actually take it to that level. From the evidence displayed here they deserve to. Sit up and take notice, the new day is dawning.
